The Spiral Jetty was named the official state work of land art by the Utah State Legislature in 2017 (Utah Code).

Representative Becky Edwards, sponsor of the HB 211 State Work of Art, told the House of Representatives that the Spiral Jetty "is internationally recognized as one of the top 10 land art features in the entire world…. I think the time is right for us to designate that and recognize and celebrate this beautiful work of art."

Constructed in 1970 by sculptor Robert Smithson, this earthwork sculpture was constructed of mud, precipitated salt crystals, rocks, and water.
